The crucial question.......

"Are there any specific courses that will prepare the students of St. Anselmo for their future tasks in our Benedictine communities?" asked Abbot Georg Holzherr in 2010. this question eventually led to the development of the LRB-course: “Leadership and the Rule of St. Benedict”.

“He suggested adding more lectures regarding the skills that are required today; skills regarding the leadership in the monasteries. ... It is not only the character of a person that is decisive; there are many tools and there is a lot of knowledge that can be taught and studied.” Fr. Markus Muff OSB, director for development in St. Anselmo, described the genesis of the LRB-course.

He himself had had available the decisive connections with the University of St. Gallen.

Three years and many meetings between representatives of the two Universities were necessary to profile and establish this strongly needed opportunity.

LRB-Course 2017 in Subiaco

The Abbot Primate appointed Prof. Fr. Luigi Gioia OSB as the academic director of the LRB-course at Sant’Anselmo. In collaboration with Prof. Günter Müller-Stewens from the University of St. Gallen he prepared the LRB-course which was held for the first time in 2013.

It consists of four Modules; each one is leaded by a teacher from St. Gallen and a Benedictine monk or nun.

Three Foundations collaborate in order to finance the LRB-course for the next few years:

It is also sponsored by the University of St. Gallen by not charging the ordinary teaching fees, “which we could never afford to pay” (Fr. Markus Muff, Inauguration speech, 2013)

In 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016   114 monks and nuns and a few lay people attended the program.

The 5th and for now last LRB-course will be from:

13th to 26th of July 2017
